The short answer
Yes. With a business VoIP phone system like 3CX, your office extension runs on an iOS or Android app on your smartphone. You make and take calls on the business number, and your voicemail, chat, and transfers come with you.
It is not call forwarding to your cell. The app is the same extension as your desk phone, so a caller dials the business, it rings wherever you are signed in, and when you call out, the customer sees the business number. Your personal number stays personal.
How VoIP on a smartphone works
One extension, three places
Each person has one extension that rings on the desk phone, the desktop app, and the iOS or Android mobile app. Answer wherever you are. It is the same extension, so nothing has to be forwarded.
Your business number, not your cell
Calls you make from the app show the business number, so customers never see your personal cell, and they reach the business when they call back.
Over Wi-Fi or mobile data
The app places calls over the internet, on Wi-Fi or your phone’s data connection. Call quality follows the connection, so a strong Wi-Fi signal or a solid cellular data signal matters more than which phone you have.
The whole phone system in your pocket
Calls, voicemail, chat, video, and transfers work the same in or out of the office. Transfer a caller to a colleague from a job site the same way you would from your desk.
Who uses the VoIP mobile app
- Teams in the field
- Technicians, sales, and staff who work from the road keep the business number on the mobile app.
- Remote and hybrid staff
- Home or office, people answer the same extension, and callers never need to know which.
- Owners and managers
- Take the important calls away from the desk without handing out a personal cell number.
- Multi-site businesses
- One phone system across locations, so a caller reaches the right person whichever office they dial.
What to know before you switch
Use the regular dialer for 911
In an emergency on a smartphone, dial 911 from the phone’s built-in dialer rather than the business app, so the call goes through the cellular network.
Keep work and personal separate
The business app is its own line on your phone. When someone leaves, their extension is removed from the system and the business number stays with the business, not in a former employee’s pocket.
Check every connection a call crosses
On the app, call quality follows your phone’s Wi-Fi or data signal. Desk phones, and a phone system hosted in your own building, also depend on the office internet and network, so those need to be sized for voice. We look at all of it when we design the system.

How we set it up
The mobile app is part of every phone system we deploy. We design the system around how your team works, port your numbers, set up the desk phones, desktop app, and mobile app on one extension per person, and support all of it after launch. When you need a new user or a change to a call flow, a real engineer makes it.

VoIP mobile app questions
- Can I use VoIP on my smartphone?
- Yes. With a 3CX phone system, each user’s extension runs on the iOS or Android mobile app as well as the desk phone and desktop app. Callers see the business number, not your personal cell, and calls, voicemail, chat, and transfers work the same way in or out of the office.
- Do I need a second phone for my business number?
- No. The mobile app puts the business extension on the phone you already carry, as a separate line from your personal number. Company-owned phones work the same way.
- Does a VoIP app use my cell minutes?
- Calls in the app run over the internet, so on Wi-Fi they use the Wi-Fi connection, and away from Wi-Fi they use your phone’s mobile data rather than calling minutes.
- Will customers see my personal cell number?
- No. Calls placed from the app show the business number, and customers who call back reach the business, not your personal phone.
- Who sets up the mobile app?
- We do, as part of the phone system deployment. We set up and support the desk phones, the desktop app, and the mobile app, and handle changes and new users after launch.
